Tea and a Chat with our Carers: Moira

"I have learnt to treat and care for any elderly person as I would for my mom and dad."

We're able to carry out our work supporting the Elderly because of the special individuals who make up our Care team. Get to know them in our weekly Tea & Chat posts and find out more about why they are so passionate about caring for the Elderly.

What makes you so passionate about caring for the Elderly?

Firstly, when I was 17, I looked after my father who was bedridden with cancer until he departed. Secondly, because I was raised by faithful parents and come from a family of 9, we are very close and care for each other. I have a lot of patience, being a carer for more than 15 years, I have learnt to treat and care for any Elderly person as I would for my mom and dad.

How has caregiving changed your life?

Working with different people from all sorts of backgrounds and different life experiences and visiting local places I’ve never been before influenced my caregiving experience. I now know more about health and how to handle different illnesses. I can handle everything or anything when it comes to caring.

What’s your favourite care memory?

Being accepted and treated as a part of the family and being included in everything which happens in their lives.

Can you tell us about some of the little things you do to make your client smile or make their day better?

I read bible verses to my clients and explain the verses to them or I read them stories that allow me to use different voices and actions to keep them focused. For clients who enjoy music, I sing along with them and I also dance with them. If they talk about the past, I get out an album and go down memory lane with them. Sometimes we also play games. I always praise them when they do something right or give them something special like a piece of chocolate.

What are some of the ways you look after yourself to be able to give the best to your clients?

Firstly I read the bible, pray, read books, knit, relax in front of the TV and most important for a Carer, I get plenty of sleep!
